about

In December 1982 Michael James Pollard was introduced to guitarist Lawrence Diagram. Both had recently left bands and were looking for new musical adventures. In need of a vocalist, they approached Steph Danziger who had sung on some of Michael’s own recordings earlier that year. At the start of 1983, they began writing and recording as a 3 piece. Inspired by the large Helvetica lettering on the side of a florists on Michael’s cycle route to the studio, from his bedsit in Whalley Range, they became ‘The Florists’. Over a six month period they wrote and recorded a number of songs and were offered a John Peel session for Radio 1. Unfortunately at this point Steph was away in America so, in need of some help on the day, they took some friends down to London with them including Sioux Goddard from ‘The Cotton Singers’ on vocals. Shortly after the session Lawrence and Michael went their separate musical ways so the few songs that remain are a snapshot of a particular place and moment in time.

Factory Records’ Lindsay Reade helped them gain a deal with Fundação Atlântica & in 1984 they recorded 16 tracks which remained unreleased. In 2020 a demo tape of Michael's from 1981 was found in a charity shop in London & so began the unearthing of the lost recordings. ... more
